Ingredient notes:
- Golden syrup: Not just used for its caramel flavour, golden syrup also helps to give a nice crust to baking as well as keeping it moist for longer.
- Brown sugar: Another key ingredient to develop the caramel flavour.
- Caramello chocolate: I love the addition of this sweet chocolate. But feel free to leave it out if you prefer.

Step by step instructions:
Dumplings: Preheat the oven to 180°C fan bake. To a large glass bowl, add the butter and golden syrup and microwave for 45 seconds or until the butter has melted. Pour in the milk and whisk together.
Sift in the flour and baking powder then use a dough whisk or spatula to combine the mixture together. Set the dough aside while you make the sauce.
Golden Syrup Sauce: To an ovenproof casserole dish or saucepan, add all of the sauce ingredients. Cook, stirring over a low heat until it starts to simmer.
Once the sauce is simmering, grab a heaped tablespoon of the dough and place a piece of Caramello chocolate in the centre. Cover to enclose it in the dough and roll into a ball. Carefully place the dough ball in the simmering sauce. Repeat until all of the dough is used up, it will make about 10 to 12 dumplings.
Turn each dumpling over to coated in the sauce and simmer for two minutes, then transfer the dish to the oven. Bake for 15 minutes until the dumplings are cooked through and the sauce has thickened up.
Remove the dish from the oven and serve the dumplings warm with vanilla ice cream.
Recipe FAQs:
Yes of course! I have a super sweet tooth and love the combination of these flavours together. But the dumplings also taste amazing without the chocolate.
While it's best to enjoy golden syrup dumplings fresh, you can prepare the dumplings and sauce ahead of time and store them separately. When ready to serve, reheat the sauce and cook the dumplings just before serving to maintain their texture and flavor.
While you can experiment with different syrups, golden syrup is traditionally used for this recipe. It has a unique flavour and sticky consistency that enhances the overall taste and texture of the dumplings.
Storage:
Store any leftover dumplings in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Reheat on the stove top adding a little extra water to the pot if the dumplings absorbed all the liquid.
