Burgers are great any night of the week and these Smash Burgers are so quick, easy and tasty. Made with beef mince, cheese, red onion, gherkins, tomato, lettuce and a delicious, creamy homemade burger sauce. Everyone will love them!
My boys are always happy to hear that burgers are on the menu, and they loved these Smash Burgers. Because you don't have to add anything to the patties, it's so quick to get them in the frying pan (or on the grill) and they don't take long to cook at all. Whip up the yummy burger sauce and let everyone add their favourite burger fillings. It's dinner, done.

Ingredient notes:
- Mince: I used beef mince that was 10% fat as it helps to keep the patties juicy and moist. You're welcome to use any minced meat that you prefer.
- Cheese: I like the prep-packaged cheese slices because it's easier and they melt better on top of the patties.
- Hamburger buns: I just used regular hamburger buns, but this recipe would also be great with brioche buns.

Step by step instructions:
Burger sauce: Combine all of the sauce ingredients together in a small bowl. Set aside.
Mince patties: Divide the mince into 8 equal portions. Place each portion between two pieces of baking paper. Use a rolling pin to roll them out flat, then season well with salt and pepper.
Place a large frying pan over a medium/high heat and add the oil. Transfer the patties to the pan by flipping the baking paper straight into the pan and then removing it. Brown the patties on one side then flip over and brown the other side. Once cooked add a slice of cheese on top of each pattie and cook for 30 seconds until it starts to melt.
Assemble: Spread the burger sauce over the base and top of the burger bun. Layer up two patties with cheese, tomato, red onion, lettuce and gherkins then place the bun on top. Serve immediately.
Recipe FAQs:
A smash burger gets its name from 'smashing' the mince onto your grill or frying pan with a spatula, giving it an irregular/squashed shape. And it's for a reason! Smashing the burger results in a sear on the outside of the meat to lock in all of the juices and flavor.
It isn't because of the burger buns, but they are easy to swap out with gluten-free buns. As always though, please check the ingredients of what you're using to ensure they are actually gluten-free.
Storage:
These burgers are best eaten at the time they are made. If you have leftovers, store them in separate containers in the fridge, then reheat and assemble with a fresh bun the following day.
Top tips:
You could use cooking spray instead of oil if you prefer.
