Ingredient notes:

- Onions: Regular, affordable, brown onions are perfect for this recipe.
- Garlic powder: If you don't have this spice in your cupboard I highly recommend you get it! I use it in a lot of my American and Mexican style cooking.
- Self-raising flour: If you don't have this type of flour in the cupboard, you can make it using 1 cup of plain flour + 1½ tsp baking powder.
Note: Scroll to the recipe card for the ingredients, quantities and the full method.
Step by step instructions:
Place the oil in a large cast iron dish and heat over a medium-high heat.
Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Add the self-raising flour, garlic powder and seasoning then whisk to combine.
Rings: In a separate bowl, coat the onions in the flour. One piece at a time, place the onion ring in the batter, allow the excess batter to drip off, then place in the hot oil. Cook approximately 4 rings at a time, turning after a few minutes.
When both sides are golden brown, place the rings on a paper towel. Repeat with the remaining onions in batches, turning the oil down if it gets too hot.
Serve immediately as a side with your favourite dipping sauce, or add to your favourite burger.
Recipe FAQs:
When deep frying, you need an oil with a high smoke point. Rice bran or canola oil are both good options.
This is one of the reasons so many people avoid deep frying! You have two good options. 1) Allow the oil to cool completely (this is really important), then using a funnel, pour it back into its original container and dispose of it. Or, 2) Allow the oil to cool completely (overnight is safe). Then using a piece of muslin or similar, strain the oil to get rid of all the little burnt bits. Use a funnel to pour it back into its original container - then use it again! Just note that oil will take on the flavour of the last food that was fried in it.
Storage:
Onion rings will last in the fridge for about 3 days. However they will go soggy over time. To restore them to their original best, reheat them in the oven or air fryer.
Top tips:
These onions are great as a snack or side. But also taste amazing in burgers! I would makes these first then leave them in a warm oven while you assemble the burger. Then add your warm, crispy rings at the end!

Would this recipe work in an airfryer?
VJ cooks
I haven't tried it in the air fryer sorry. I think it would be too wet though. Most recipes for onion rings made in the air fryer appear to have a crumb on them, which would prevent the batter from dripping off.
