An easy and comforting recipe for pear crumble. Pear slices cooked in butter and brown sugar, topped with a crispy oaty topping. Serve with custard and ice cream.
We have a beautiful (and popular!) recipe for Apple Crumble on the website, but it's so good to finally add this Pear Crumble recipe to the collection. In the apple version, the apples are stewed in a pot. But in this pear crumble, I've cooked the pears in butter and brown sugar to give them a lovely caramel flavour.
You might think a crumble can be served with custard OR ice cream. But I'm here to say - serve it with both! You're welcome.
Ingredient notes:
- Pears: Any type of pears will work in this recipe. I used a mixture of what was in my fruit bowl!
- Sugar: Brown sugar gives the pears a lovely caramel flavour.
- Oats: This is the key to the crispy and chewy topping. For more crunch feel free to add some walnuts to this mixture too.

Step by step instructions:
Peel the pears and slice thinly. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan bake.
In a shallow casserole dish on a low heat, melt the butter. Add the brown sugar and mix together for a few minutes until bubbling.
Add the pear slices and stir to coat, add the water and simmer for 5 minutes until the pears start to soften. Remove from the heat and make the topping.
In a large bowl stir together the melted butter and brown sugar. Add the oats, flour and cinnamon then mix until well combined. Spread the crumble evenly over the top of the pears.
Bake for 30 minutes or until the crumble is crisp and golden. Serve warm with custard and ice cream.
Recipe FAQs:
Yes, peeling the pears does make for a smoother texture in the crumble. However, if you prefer a bit more texture or if you’re using very thin-skinned pears, you could leave the skin on.
Yes, you can assemble the crumble and freeze it before baking. When ready to bake, bake it straight from the freezer, adding a bit of extra baking time.
Storage:
Store any leftover pear crumble in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Enjoy hot or cold.
Pear crumble can also be frozen. Store in an airtight container or freezer bag in the freezer for up to three months. Defrost completely before reheating.
