Devilled Sausage; another retro meal that we ummed and ahhed about adding to the website. But once we trialled it, we knew it had to be here! Golden brown sausages in a tasty sauce made from onions, apples, beef stock and tomatoes. Serve on fluffy mashed potatoes with a side of your favourite green veg - or just on its own!
If you like this meal, you will probably also like my Curried Sausages. Another super popular sausage recipe on the website.

Ingredient notes:
- Sausages: I used beef sausages which tasted great. But you could also use pork, chicken or venison sausages if you prefer.
- Apple: Any type of apples will work in this recipe. They give a lovely sweetness to the dish.
- Relish: Again, feel free to use your preferred chutney. I used caramelised onion relish but you could also use tomato chutney or any homemade chutney you have in the fridge!

Step by step instructions:
Heat a large frying pan to a medium heat and brown the sausages on all sides then set aside.
Add the onion to the pan and sauté for a few minutes until it starts to soften. Add the sliced apple and sauté for a few more minutes.
Stir in the paprika and cornflour. Mix together the boiling water and stock cube until dissolved then pour into the pan and stir to combine. Add the tomatoes, relish, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and brown sugar. Stir to mix and combine.
Return the sausages to the pan and simmer on low for 10 to 15 minutes until the sausages are cooked through and the sauce has thickened and reduced.
Serve on top of mashed potatoes with a side of green vegetables of your choice.
Recipe FAQs:
You can use any type of sausage, but pork sausages (like Italian sausages) or beef sausages work best. Some people also use chicken or lamb sausages for a different flavor profile. If you're making devilled sausages for a more traditional taste, go for a hearty, full-flavored sausage that will hold up well to the sauce.
Yes! Devilled sausages can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. The flavors tend to deepen over time, making them even tastier. You can also freeze them for up to a month—just reheat thoroughly before serving.
Some great side dishes to serve with devilled sausages are mashed potatoes, rice, steamed vegetables or crusty bread.
Storage:
Store any leftover devilled sausages in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave until piping hot.
Devilled sausages can also be frozen. Store in an airtight container or freezer bag in the freezer for up to three months. Defrost completely before reheating.
